oh wait. is this inspired perhaps by the song "the hanging tree"?

"a man murdered three" (the marks)
"necklace of rope" (the hanging rope)
"if we meet at the hanging tree?" (the tree)
etc.

i can only make out two ideas....

1) the kids are ghosts who have all died because of that rope. And they gathered to see another one fall. (hence the cross)
2) A symbol for the negative consequences of conflicting religion? (hence the cross) ---> leads to the death of innocent ones(children)

but....I can't even begin to guess what the three vertical marks on the tree stand for.... Stands out too much to be unintentional....

Incredible detail work. At first glance, I thought this was a traditional print- possibly a copper etch. I love the contrast between the innocent, wondering faces of the ragged children and the silent, almost menacing tree.
